Micro-loan Program in Peru

May 21, 2013 marks the inauguration of two of The Denan Project’s micro-loan programs in Peru which will be managed by new cooperatives formed for this purpose. Both projects are being conducted with the support of the government of the Municipality of Limatambo which will be providing the training while sharing the cost with The Denan Project. The first cooperative will be for the raising of Cuyes (guinea pigs) in the village of Uratari. Cuyes have long been a source of protein for the inhabitants of the high Andes. They will be raised for local consumption and for sale in the cities. Cuyes can even be found on the menus of the finest restaurants in Cusco and Lima. The second cooperative is for a beekeeping project in the tiny, picturesque village of Pivil where the climate and flora are conducive to raising bees for their honey. Pivil was a dying town with not one child in the school and where all the younger people had left for the cities to search for a better opportunity to support their families. Now a new road has been put into Pivil and because of the implementation of the beekeeping micro-loan program some of the younger families are starting to return.
